My name is Fleur and I struggled as a child with Type 2 Diabetes which went undetected. Even though my mother had taken me to a doctor with her suspicions… A finger prick test was done and at that very moment, there was no reason for concern as it was in range. And that was that. The struggle continued.
It took many years of struggling and wondering what was wrong with me until I became pregnant with my son. Diabetes roared its head and I was admitted to the hospital with a blood glucose level of 28.3mmol/l
That’s how it all started. After the pregnancy, there was no way back and I was fully insulin dependent.
I went to see my first endocrinologist. He was fantastic and the relief I felt from getting help was overwhelming. Unbelievable how long I managed to carry on without professional help. My Endocrinologist was a savior. And with 2 types of insulin, a blood glucose meter, and a ton of information, was sent home.
And that’s where the real journey started. There are a million things an endocrinologist can’t help you with. It’s simply not their job.
